I'm Dr Sophie Mayhew. With over 20 years of experience, I'm here to listen and help.
I'm a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Compassion Focused Therapy Specialist. I've worked as an NHS psychologist for over 20 years, qualifying as a Clinical Psychologist in 2003. I am an Expert Witness Psychologist for Civil Litigation and have extensive and broad experience in adult mental health.
Since qualifying, I've been an advocate and practitioner of Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). This particular psychological approach enables people to develop a better relationship with themselves, especially those who encounter one or a number of difficulties including:
- Self-critical thinking
- Low self-esteem
- Relationship problems
- Shame
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Stress
- Trauma
- Paranoia or Hearing voices

I offer video call consultations as well as face to face meetings in my fully accessible office in Tavistock, Devon..
In therapy I work with you to develop your compassionate resilience and foster personal growth. My warm, compassionate and professional approach has enabled many people to face their difficulties and learn to understand them, easing distress by facilitating a better understanding of themselves and their individual needs.
I'm one of the South West leads for Compassion Focused Therapy with The Compassionate Mind Foundation a charitable organisation that aims to promote wellbeing through the scientific understanding and application of compassion. I also offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, private counselling, supervision, training and consultancy services. I am an Expert Witness for the court for personal accident and injury claimants and defendants.
I'm the author of a number of academic publications in the field of Compassion Focused Therapy and I specialise in the application of this model with clients affected by psychosis. I am an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a registered Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
